The Somali wild ass is the smallest wild member of the horse family.

Size: Shoulder Height 1.25 - 1.35m
Weight: 230 - 250kg

Habitat
Somali wild ass are found in small patches of the rocky deserts of north East Africa.

Diet
Somali wild ass eat a range of foods from grasses and sedges, to bark, leaves, buds and roots when grass is scarce.

Breeding
Breeding is believed to take place in the wet season in the wild, and females are pregnant for over a year. There is only 1 young born at a time, which can live up to 40 years old.

Conservation
The Somali wild ass is one of the most endangered animals with only a few hundred left in the wild, they are threatened by war, hunting and habitat loss.
