Somali Black-headed Sheep

Ovis aries aries somali

Black-headed sheep are a domestic sheep breed. They store fat in their hindquarters, which gives them an unusual appearance. They are also known as ‘fat buttocks sheep’!

Size: Shoulder Height 70 - 80cm
Weight: 30 - 36kg

Black-headed sheep were originally bred in Somalia, Africa.

Black-headed sheep eat grass and their cleft upper lip helps them to graze very close to the ground.

One or occasionally two lambs are born after a pregnancy of about 5 months in late winter or early spring. They are weaned after approximately 6 or 7 weeks.
