Rock Hyrax

Procavia capensis

Size: Head / Body Length 45 - 60cm
Weight: 2.5 - 4.6kg

Rock hyrax live in a wide variety of habitats, from arid desert to rainforests, but are usually found on rocky outcrops and crags. Rock hyrax are built for rock climbing – with special sticky pads on their feet to ensure sure footing! Try to spot our hyrax dashing around their rocky enclosure – look carefully, their fur is very well camouflaged!

Rock hyrax eat a variety of grasses and shrubs.

Rock hyrax are born after a pregnancy of around 7- 8 months. One to six young are born fully furred and have their eyes open. They can move around with agility after a day.

There are no known major threats to the rock hyrax however they are still hunted locally.
