Red River Hog
Also known as the bush pig, red river hogs are members of the pig family, recognisable by their striking orange to red/brown fur.
Red river hogs are found mainly in rainforest areas of West and Central Africa, where they live in groups known as ‘sounders’.
These pigs are omnivorous, mainly feeding on roots, bulbs and fallen fruit, but they also eat carrion and hunt small mammals and birds.
Young are born in nests after a pregnancy of around 4 months, and will stay hidden with their mothers for the first 2 months of their lives.
Red river hogs are not classed as endangered as they have a wide distribution and are considered common in the wild. However in some areas their numbers are decreasing due to hunting.
