Plated Lizard

Gerrhosaurus major

The African plated, or Sudanese greater plated lizard, is a reptile. There are 14 species of plated lizards.

Size: Length: 45 – 60cm
Weight: 250g

African plated lizards are found in eastern and southern Africa, from Ethiopia to South Africa. They are found mainly in rocky deserts habitats.

These lizards are omnivores (eat both meat and plants), feeding on leaves, flowers, beetles, grasshoppers and sometimes even smaller lizards.

The females usually lay between 2 - 6 eggs, which are incubated for around 3 - 4 months.

The plated lizard is not believed to be threatened in the wild. It has a wide distribution and seems to very adaptable to different habitats.
