Milky Eagle Owl
The milky, or Verraux’s, eagle owl is one of the largest of Africa’s 47 species of owl.
Size: 60 - 65cm
Weight: 1.6 - 3.1kg
Milky eagle owls are able to live in a variety of habitats, from rainforests to dry grasslands.
In the evening these large and powerful owls go hunting, and are capable of taking prey as large as hares, but more usually hedgehogs, fruit bats, mice and snakes.
Milky eagle owls usually take over the abandoned nests of large hawks or eagles, sometimes forcibly, normally laying 2 eggs.
The milky eagle owl is not believed to be endangered as it has a large distribution and its population is stable.
