There are 11 species of colobus monkey found in Africa. The king colobus can be recognized by its white tail and black body.
Size: Head / Body Length 57 - 68cm
Weight: 6.7 - 10.1kg
The king or western colobus is found in forests from Gambia to Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa.
Colobus monkeys mainly eat leaves, but as leaves don’t contain many nutrients, they have a special multi-chambered stomach to extract as much nutrition as possible.
The female gives birth to one young after a 6 month pregnancy and will usually have young once every 2 years.
These monkeys are considered ‘vulnerable’ as their numbers are dropping in the wild due to habitat loss and hunting by humans for their meat and fur.
