Size: Head / Body Length 57 - 68cm
Weight: 6.7 - 10.1kg
The king or western colobus is found in forests from Gambia to Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa.
Colobus monkeys mainly eat leaves, but as leaves don’t contain many nutrients, they have a special multi-chambered stomach to extract as much nutrition as possible.
The female gives birth to one young after a 6 month pregnancy and will usually have young once every 2 years.
Numbers of King Colobus are believed to have dropped by up to 50% in just 30 years! Habitat loss and hunting by humans are the major threats to this species.
