Africa Alive launches naming competition for new giraffe calves

Monday 16th November 2020

We’re asking for members of the public to help name our two newly born reticulated giraffe calves, with two winners receiving a free ticket to the zoo and a giraffe feeding experience!

We recently welcomed two reticulated baby giraffes to the zoo with a male giraffe calf born on Wednesday 7 October and a female giraffe calf born on Friday 23 October.

The competition commences on Monday 16 November and will run until Friday 4 December, with entries being made on the zoos #WildAboutSurvival JustGiving page. Keepers will choose the winning names shortly after the closing date, which will then be announced on Africa Alive’s social media pages.

Claudia Roberts, Joint Managing Director, said: “The births of the reticulated giraffe calves at Africa Alive has brought some joyful news at an otherwise difficult time for our zoos. Although our zoos are now closed to the public due to the second national lockdown, the donations we are receiving from our amazing guests and members of the public are invaluable to the survival of our zoos. We can’t wait to hear all of the lovely name suggestions and are excited to choose new names for our adorable giraffe calves.”

The reticulated giraffes at Africa Alive are part of a European Endangered breeding programme. Both calves were born just 17 days apart without complications, with the male calf born to mother Kibibi and female calf born to mother Kiara.

The zoos Conservation Education Manager, Sara Goatcher, has created a short story about a baby giraffe who is searching for its name and the journey they take around the zoo, asking for help from its fellow zoo residents to find a new name. The story has been created into a video and will be shared in line with the naming competition.

A minimum donation of £1 is required to name one of the giraffes, or £2 minimum donation to name both giraffes. Entries can be made by donating to the JustGiving page and commenting the suggested name in the comments section. Entrants must allow JustGiving to share their email address with the Zoological Society of East Anglia in order to be contacted should they be a winner.
