The Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA) is the dynamic conservation and education charity that leads Banham Zoo and Africa Alive. Join our ONE-TEAM in Hospitality, Retail and Guest Services at either Banham Zoo or Africa Alive. We are expecting a great staycation summer and are keen to recruit enthusiastic new colleagues for a variety of roles in the Zoos.

Current vacancies we are recruiting for start in April:

  • Flexible team members to do 16-20 hrs a week (10am-2pm, 4-5 days per week.)
  • Full-time Cook – train as you work, we can support you with qualifications.
  • Apprenticeships – Full-time in Retail and Hospitality.

In Retail & Guest Services you will be part of a busy team who are the first-point contact welcoming our fabulous visitors and supporting them with services and enquiries.

In Hospitality you will be providing an excellent level of service in our restaurants, coffee shops and kiosks. You will need to demonstrate flexibility to be a cashier, cook, kitchen porter and catering assistant.

Seasonal Animal Trainer and Presenter (April to October)

We have an exciting vacancy for an Animal Trainer and Presenter to join our team on a fixed term contract, based at Africa Alive.

About the role

Working under the direction of the Head of Animal Training and Presentations (AT&P), you will provide the best possible care and management for the animals on the training and presentation department, delivering daily presentations at Africa Alive! The successful candidate should be able to conduct presentations to the agreed standard.

This position is based on a 40hr a week contract and will run from April to 31st October 2021.  Please note that no accommodation is offered with this role.

Some of the tasks you will do:

  • Ensure a high level of care for all animals and birds.
  • Deliver quality animal presentations that include our key messages to guests at Africa Alive, ensuring that they are fun and educational.
  • Collect relevant animal information and report back effectively to your senior/s.
  • Keep up to date, accurate animal records for all stock in your care.
  • Ensure work practices are carried out with the highest consideration for the animals and birds in your care.
  • Provide excellent customer care and ensure customer satisfaction at all times.
  • Ensure and encourage the highest level of safety for public and colleagues at all times, by operating in accordance with the Zoo Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.

About you:

  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate relevant animal training experience and be familiar with positive operant conditioning. In addition to this and a key requirement for the role, are excellent communication and public presentation skills.
  • Working under the direction of the Head of Animal Training and Presentations, you should already have a minimum of two years’ experience working with and training animals, preferably with some exotic animal training.
  • An animal care related qualification/s would be an advantage but more important is the desire to interact both formally and informally with our guests at every opportunity, providing an additional educational experience that enhances their visit.
  • You must be prepared to work with all kinds of domestic and exotic species and be hard-working and conscientious.
  • Be prepared to work as part of a team and expect to work some weekends, Bank Holidays and occasional evenings.
  • A full driving licence is essential.
  • Whilst the role is based at Africa Alive! candidates may be required to travel to Banham Zoo for training and to provide additional cover.

Summer Marketing Intern

(3-month Contract) – May/June to End of August

ZSEA (Zoological Society of East Anglia) is the charity which runs Banham Zoo and Africa Alive and is in an exciting period of change. To strengthen our commitment to conservation through collaborations, networking, and training activities to measurably improve local, national, and global biodiversity; To educate about nature, in nature, and for nature to foster engagement with the natural world; and to enable Africa Alive! And Banham Zoo to empower people to make positive changes in their lives and local communities by promoting the connections between nature and well-being.

By 2025, Our Five-Year Pledge will ensure that 15 species are safer from extinction; 15,000 individuals will experience improved well-being and 150,000 people are better connected to nature.

About the role

Reporting to the Zoos Marketing and Partnerships Manager, we are looking for an enthusiastic and creative marketing summer intern to assist our marketing team from May/June – end of August for a minimum period of 3 months to work on a host of marketing activities both online and offline at our physical sites, Banham Zoo and Africa Alive!

Some of the tasks you will do:

  • Provide daily admin support to the marketing department across a host of exciting projects including a rebrand, new ecommerce site, and a host of super staycation summer!
  • Assist in the setting of internal systems for the new inhouse marketing department.
  • Assist in the communication across Internal departments of the weekly marketing update and be aware of marketing department individuals and their roles and responsibilities.
  • Support in events and planning of events which are part of the summer marketing campaigns across both zoos.
  • Gathering content for the marketing department both on and offline.
  • Be the daily contact for the marketing department during the busy summer period and ensure the marketing department are made aware of anything new in the organisation that requires promotion or branding.
  • Provide excellent customer care and always ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Always ensure and encourage the highest level of safety for public and colleagues, by operating in accordance with the Zoo Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.

About you:

  • You will be a recent graduate or currently studying marketing and be confident, creative, can hit the ground running working across several exciting marketing projects. Every day will be different, so flexibility and ability to manage a busy workload.
  • This role will suit a friendly, collaborative, energetic and creative individual who wants to gain an insight across the whole of marketing at our busiest time of the year.
  • Well-developed communication skills, both orally and written will be required.
  • A whizz at Excel, PowerPoint and someone who can easily pick up new systems.
  • Someone with a natural creative ability with great ideas which they can input, as our new inhouse team create our strategy for the next 12 months.
  • A full driving licence is essential. As you will need your own transport as there will be a requirement to work weekends occasionally and to attend both Africa Alive and Banham Zoo as and when required. Mileage can be claimed at 0.45p per mile when travelling between each site.

Activities & Presentation Officer

July to Mid-September

This position involves working in a close team to deliver quality presentations, which promote conservation, the work of the Zoological Society of East Anglia and the wonders of the natural world.

About the role

We have 3 exciting vacancies for Activities Presenters to join our team on a fixed term contract, 1 based at Africa Alive and 2 at Banham Zoo.

The positions are offered as a zero hour contract, with specific hours / days to be discussed, and will run from July to Mid-September.

Some of the tasks you will do:

  • While driving the Safari Road Train, provide commentary in accordance with the script in a friendly and informative manner.
  • Writing new train talks/information for approval. Assisting in plans to theme and upgrade the road train experience.
  • Carry out the required health & safety checks to ensure that the road train is clean, safe to always use.
  • Assist in providing and delivering our feeding talks presentations.
  • Maintaining the highest possible standard of day-to-day animal husbandry for the animals and enclosures within the Discovery Centre.
  • Assist in the upkeep and manning of the Discovery Centre, helping the team to ensure it is interactive, fun & informative.
  • Ensure work practices are carried out with the highest consideration for the animals in your care.
  • Always provide excellent customer care and customer satisfaction.
  • Follow the highest level of safety for public and colleagues at all times, by operating in accordance with the ZSEA’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.

About you:

  • The successful candidate will have experience of public speaking and good communication skills.
  • With a good level of animal/environmental knowledge, coupled with excellent customer care.
  • A “can-do”, flexible attitude is essential.
  • Candidates must be over 21 years old with a full clean driving licence and over 2 years driving experience to drive the Road train, in accordance with our insurance requirements.
  • Be prepared to work as part of a team and expect to work some weekends, Bank Holidays and occasional evenings.
  • Whilst the role is based at Africa Alive! candidates may be required to travel to Banham Zoo for training and to provide additional cover.

Cleaners

We have vacancies for Cleaners on zero hours contracts to be based at Banham Zoo and Africa Alive.

About the role

A vital role required to enhance our visitor’s day out, by ensuring that our zoos are free from litter and that all areas both indoors and out are clean and presented to a high standard.

Some of the tasks you will do:

  • Customer Service – Ensure that high levels of service are consistently delivered to our customers. Create a warm and welcoming atmosphere by acknowledging every customer and providing service that is friendly, courteous and helpful always. Maintain a good knowledge of the products available within the zoo to enable you to assist visitors with any information.
  • Hygiene & Cleanliness – Carry out cleaning tasks as directed by your supervisor in both indoor and outdoor areas, quickly and efficiently to the required quality standard as set by the company. Comply with all health & safety requirements as trained.
  • Presentation – Ensure that high standards of presentation are always maintained throughout our sites. All areas are to be kept free of litter and the litter bins are monitored and emptied as required.
  • Stock Levels – Ensure that adequate supplies of all hygiene and cleaning materials are replenished in all public areas. Plan to ensure that you have the required cleaning materials and PPE on your person to complete tasks allocated at the start of your shift.
  • Security & Control – All chemicals are to be safely and correctly stored when not being used. Follow end of shift procedures for locking up of chemicals and other cleaning materials. Report any damages, maintenance issues or suspicious behaviour to a member of the management team.
  • Teamwork – Support and assist colleagues to ensure efficient service is delivered. Ensure effective communication and cooperation with other departments. Actively participate in any training required for your role.
  • Always ensure and encourage the highest level of safety for public and colleagues, by operating in accordance with ZSEA’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.

About you:

  • Applicants must be always hard-working, conscientious, and punctual for work. Be prepared to work as a team and
  • With support be able to organise, plan and prioritise a busy workload.
  • Previous experience of cleaning desirable, however not essential as full training will be given.
  • Be able to accurately delivery the quality of work required in the set timescales.
  • Have excellent communication skills (effective spoken, face to face and written skills).
  • You will be required to consistently deliver excellent standards of presentation and to follow all relevant policies and procedures.
